Bellwort

Plant of the Week April 18, 2021

 Uvularia grandiflora

by Nyle Zikmund, Anoka County Master Gardener

Bellwort is one of the best perennial flowers. This hardy spring ephemeral thrives in part to full shade. While it prefers moist, well-composted soil, it can tolerate drought and dry soil. Typically, it grows 18” to 24” tall. Bellwort is most striking when planted in groups.  Mass plantings under shade trees provide an especially eye-catching display.

Their lovely yellow hanging flowers droop 1 to 2 inches. The slight twist of these bright petals offers a stark contrast to the light green stems and large 2-inch by 6-inch leaves.

Bellwort is hardy from zones 4 to 9. Simply provide some shelter from the sun, regular moisture, and compost and you will have sunny yellow flowers for years to come!
