Plant of the Week April 3, 2023

Supertunia® (Petunia x hybrida)

By Julie Gustafson, Anoka County Master Gardener

Do you love petunias but hate how they get leggy by the end of summer? Are you tired of constantly deadheading them to encourage more blooms? Proven Winners offers an enhanced hybrid called the Supertunia. Unlike traditional petunias, Supertunias remain healthy and colorful well past the dog-days of summer. You will often see more blooms than leaves right up until the first hard frost. Plus, they do not require any deadheading.

These beauties work well in the landscape and in containers. They prefer full sun and grow 12” tall by 18-24” wide with routine watering. They are heavy feeders. Fertilize with a water-soluble fertilizer at least once a week to get the most blooms. They can be planted outside as soon as temperatures remain above 50 degrees. Most established plants will tolerate a light fall frost.

If you’re looking for a colorful, no-fuss summer annual, try the Supertunia. These vivid plants will easily quadruple in size over the summer and create a thick carpet of blooms. Supertunias come in white, red, pink, yellow, and purple. Once you try them, you will never go back to traditional petunias again.
