Add a tropical flair to your garden by planting the Kopper King hardy hibiscus. It is available at many garden centers. Hardy hibiscus is the only perennial hibiscus that can grow in Zone 4. This herbaceous plant produces striking pink or white blooms up to 12” wide. Mature plants reach three to four feet tall. Kopper King hibiscus is beneficial to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. It’s also deer and rabbit resistant, making it a great option to serve as a border plant.
This stunner blooms from mid-summer to early fall with showy flowers from top to bottom. It loves water! Be sure to plant in moist, but well-draining soil to ensure a healthy plant. To ensure a healthy deep root system maintain a consistent watering routine. Although this plant loves water, it becomes drought-tolerant once the roots are well-established. It also grows well with full sun or some afternoon shade.
The only known pest is the Japanese beetle. It’s important to note that there is currently no chemical method to prevent them. Check plants early and often and place any beetles in a jar of soapy water and discard them
