Ligularia
Plant of the Week September 19, 2022
Ligularia (Ligularia spp.) Written by Lynda Ellis, Anoka County Master Gardener
Ligularia is the genus name of over 100 species. The one common in Minnesota is a one to two-foot tall and wide perennial. It has glossy green, large, round foliage with a purple underside. Flowers are orange-yellow and bloom in mid to late summer through early fall. They do best in shade or part shade, with moist soil.
As mentioned above, they are tall plants. Some ground covers, such as periwinkle (Vinca minor) can grow underneath.
They spread readily by seeds or division. The expanse of flowers and foliage in the picture came from a single plant. Volunteers appear in the surrounding grass, but mowing takes care of them.
Care for them is easy once established. Water them if they wilt in the hot sun.
